Final Report

The National Citizens Inquiry’s 24-day hearings resulted in a 5,400-page report detailing what really happened, including 643 pages of analysis and 400 recommendations.

The inquiry uncovered several critical findings:
  1. Government Accountability and Trust: The public’s trust in the government’s handling of the pandemic was significantly eroded. The inquiry identified a lack of transparency and accountability in decision-making processes.
  2. Impact on Public Health and Wellbeing: The measures taken during the pandemic had profound impacts on public health, economic stability, and mental wellbeing, with particularly adverse effects on vulnerable populations such as the elderly and children.
  3. Inconsistencies and Inefficiencies: There were inconsistencies and inefficiencies in the implementation of public health measures across different regions, leading to varied outcomes in managing the spread of COVID-19.
  4. Communication Failures: The inquiry highlighted significant failures in communication strategies, resulting in misinformation and public confusion.
  5. Recommendations for Improvement: Key recommendations included enhancing transparency, ensuring accountability, improving public health infrastructure, and developing more balanced approaches to crisis management that consider economic and social factors alongside public health.

By addressing these findings and implementing the recommendations, the NCI aims to improve the resilience and preparedness of Canadian institutions for future public health crises.
